At Animal Ark Veterinary Hospital, our team wants to help you keep your pet in the best possible health. An important part of doing that is to bring them in for annual checkups with a veterinarian, and an important part of those checkups is to make sure your pet receives the proper vaccinations and treatments for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Since April is National Heartworm Awareness Month, in this article, we’ll be focusing on why regular heartworm treatment is an absolute must for your pet.
Heartworms are a type of parasite that spreads through the bites of infected mosquitoes. In their early stages of life, heartworms are microscopic in size, and they travel through the host’s blood vessels and into the lungs and heart. Once there, they mature, growing to about a foot in length, and begin to spawn more microscopic worms. These offspring can then be picked up via mosquito bites and transmitted to new pets. If your pet contracts heartworms, they may become lethargic, cough, or become short of breath. If left untreated for too long, heartworms can become fatal. Getting treatment once your pet is already infected can be a complicated matter, but fortunately we at Animal Ark Veterinary Hospital offer preventative heartworm treatments that will effectively protect your pet from these parasites.
We hope this information allows you to make the best decisions for your pet’s care. If you want to make sure that your pet is receiving the best heartworm treatment regimen, we encourage you to give us a call.
