Did you know that February is National Pet Dental Health Month? While you certainly don’t need to wait until February to consider caring for your pet’s teeth, setting aside time to ensure that your pets have pearly whites and healthy mouths is important! Here at Animal Ark Elkin Veterinary Hospital, we want to help give you some great tips so that your pets will be comfortable with their oral health. There are many things you can do to ensure that your pet has proper oral health throughout their life, including some of the following:

  • Start them young (or now)! Unfortunately, around 70-80% of pets will have signs of poor dental health such as excessive plaque or gingivitis by the time they are only 3! Start when they are young (or however old they are now- it’s never too late!) by helping them get comfortable with a toothbrush and the brushing process. This will become part of their routine and their oral care will be much easier.

  • Keep regular appointments. Make sure that your pet is able to keep their regular veterinary appointments. During regular care, a veterinarian caring for your pet can examine their teeth and recommend brushing techniques or even schedule a professional dental cleaning.
  • Watch for warning signs of dental problems. Dental problems can lead to other problems that can be very problematic. What might feel like a little plaque can actually lead to bad breath, malnutrition and infections or heart issues. If your pet is drooling excessively, always batting at their mouth with their paw, avoiding kibble in favor of softer foods or has signs of swelling or pain in their mouth, bring them to your veterinarian immediately.

We hope that these tips have been helpful for your pet’s dental health. Take National Pet Dental Health Month as a reminder to brush regularly and make appointments with your vet to showcase their beautiful smiles around Elkin, North Carolina!
